The Gambling Addiction Prevention Act
Published: October 28, 2019
The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) estimates that as many as 56,000 active duty members of the Armed Forces meet the criteria for gambling disorder. It’s a serious health and financial issue – and also poses a national security concern by impacting individual readiness and performance of affected service members.
The Gambling Addiction Prevention Act (GAP) of 2018 is a bi-partisan bill that recommends specific policies and programs to help prevent and treat gambling problems among members of the military. It’s been endorsed by the National Council on Problem Gambling, the Association of Problem Gambling Administrators, the National Center for Responsible Gambling and many others.
The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2020 (NDAA) is one part of the GAP Act that still needs to be passed. The National Council on Problem Gambling is working to make sure that happens by collecting signatures in support of the NDAA. Many organizations have already joined in encouraging political leaders to protect our troops by preventing problem gambling.
