Marijuana and Problem Gambling

The Connection is Becoming Clearer
Recent national studies suggest that marijuana users gamble more often than the general population. According to a study conducted by the Nevada Council on Problem Gambling, those under the influence of marijuana are more apt to make rash and impulsive decisions – magnifying their reactions to gambling wins and losses.
Of particular concern is the risk for young adults. A 2014 study found that 30% of gamblers between the ages of 18 and 26 used cannabis within the past three months. Those who used marijuana gambled more frequently. As legalization of medical and recreational marijuana spreads across the country, some states are debating on regulations regarding the distance between casinos and marijuana dispensaries.
