Ohio’s Warm Transfer Project to provide after-hours support for problem gambling
Published: May 18, 2020
The Ohio Problem Gambling Helpline is available 24/7—and soon clinician support will be too. To connect those calling after business hours (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.) to services they need, the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio (PGNO), along with the Ohio Problem Gambling Advisory Board and Ohio for Responsible Gambling, is launching a new warm transfer process.
Under the new process, Ohio Problem Gambling Helpline Specialists who take calls will make a ‘warm transfer,’ when needed, to on-call clinicians who are:
- Ohio-licensed
- Gambling disorder treatment-qualified
- Knowledgeable of Ohio’s statewide service system
- Highly knowledgeable of their specific regions of the state
PGNO has selected a group of qualified on-call counselors, throughout the regions of the state, who will provide triage services to callers who request to speak with a gambling counselor. Clinicians will be able to use the Ohio for Responsible Gambling directory of clinicians and service agencies for referrals. They will also make follow-up calls to individuals who follow through with an appointment.
All on-call counselors will be compensated as contractors of PGNO and attend a day-long training retreat in Columbus on May 22, 2020, if it is safe to gather at this date.
