Unplug and Spend Time with Your Family this Thanksgiving
Published: November 23, 2020
The holiday season usually means spending extra time with your family and children. But unfortunately, the problems of youth gaming don’t take off for the holidays. Research shows that 6.5% of 14-21 year-olds are at risk for problem gambling, especially when they’re exposed to gaming and technology at a young age.
So, in an increasingly digital world, what holiday activities can you do as a family? We’ve come up with three non-digital activities you and your family can do together to generate thankfulness and gratitude.
Get outside Together
Before you prepare the Thanksgiving meal, get up early with your family and take a trip outside. Whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood, or a trip to a local bike trail, time in the fresh air and being together will leave you all feeling connected and grateful.
Bake a Thanksgiving treat
Pumpkin spice makes everything nice. Grab your pantry ingredients and get baking with your family this Thanksgiving. Working together to make something delicious — and having fun while doing so — fosters teamwork and collaboration. And there is nothing better than splitting a sweet treat around the table with your loved ones afterward.
Play a board game
After the Thanksgiving festivities wind down, instead of watching a football game or playing a video game, invite your child to play an old fashioned board game. Games could include Scrabble, Clue, or Monopoly. Not only will it be fun, but it will also tap into critical problem- solving and creative skills.
Have a safe and fun Thanksgiving this year. And remember that if your child is a gamer and is no longer having fun, or it’s negatively affecting their mood or spending habits, they may have a problem. Learn more about responsible gaming practices for kids at https://changethegameohio.org/.
