More people are talking about — and playing — video games than ever before.
According to a recent research study conducted by Twitter, 91 million adults talk about gaming on their social media platform.
Whether it’s because people are at home more due to the COVID-19 pandemic or advancements in technology, Tweets about gaming in the US have increased significantly over the last few years — from 76 million in 2019 to 157 million in 2021.
And the conversation topics about gaming on Twitter have started to expand, too. Discussions about everything from Esports to PC gaming have all increased over the past year.
Discussions on Twitter about the following topics increased significantly from 2020 to 2021:
- Gaming influencers – Up 184%
- PC gaming – Up 132%
- Esports -Up 38%
- Gaming for women -Up 31%
These statistics from Twitter demonstrate there is a massive community of people who play games and discuss them regularly. To make gaming safer for all, it’s important to learn about the harmful effects gaming can have when played in excess.
Excessive gaming can look different for everyone, but there are a few common signs to look for. These can include prioritizing gaming above sleeping or eating, avoiding relationships with friends and family, or playing despite knowing it’s causing mental, emotional, or physical harm.
