NFL Launches New Responsible Gambling Campaign

The Super Bowl might feel like light-years away for the NFL fans out there, but it will be upon us before we know it. The Super Bowl also serves as big opportunity for sports betting, with over 136 million dollars wagered on the 2021 Super Bowl alone.

With the Super Bowl fast approaching and the increase in popularity of fantasy sports, the NFL has recently launched a responsible gambling public awareness program to educate fans on the importance of responsible gambling during the NFL season and beyond.

The campaign encourages players to stick to a game plan, set a budget to know their limits, use licensed, regulated operators, and ask for help if they need it. The core message of the campaign is “Stick to Your Game Plan. Always Bet Responsibly.”

As part of this important initiative, the NFL has inked a multimillion-dollar, multi-year deal to expand its long-standing partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling. 

The NFL’s funding from this deal will allow NCPG to start a national grant program to fund problem gambling services offered by local and state providers. The grant will also expand prevention programs, including multiple youth-facing campaigns and curricula. 

“The National Council on Problem Gambling is pleased to partner with the NFL to shine a light on the importance of responsible betting,” said Keith Whyte, executive director of the National Council on Problem Gambling in a press release. “With this partnership, we are able to exponentially enhance the NCPG’s ability to provide advocacy, awareness, and assistance on problem gambling.”

The deal will also help improve the National Problem Gambling Helpline system and launch the new website, which will provide the public with responsible gambling resources and connect people to help if they need it.

Christopher Halpin, NFL Executive VP, Chief Strategy and Growth Officer, was also very excited about expanding its partnership with NCPG. 

“We feel it is critical that the NFL uses the power of our voice to educate and encourage fans who choose to bet to do so in a safe and responsible way,” he said in the press release. “We also recognize that responsible betting programs across the country are under-resourced, especially as legalization spreads nationwide…the sports and betting industries need to learn from international examples and make sure the development of education and support programs matches the state-by-state growth in legalized sports betting.”
