Give Back to Your Community by Volunteering This April

Published: April 11, 2022

There are plenty of ways to improve your mental health, including getting enough sleep, exercising, and maintaining a healthy diet. But did you know that volunteering can have amazing benefits to your mental health while positively impacting the community around you?

Next week is National Volunteer Week, which honors the individuals who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities. To recognize and bring awareness to this week, Before You Bet put together a list of volunteer opportunities that individuals of all ages can participate in. No matter what part of the state you live in, Ohio is full of volunteer opportunities!

The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio – One great way to give back if you live in the Columbus area is by volunteering at the Furniture Bank. The organization repairs and organizes donated furniture to give to families in need. By either donating your items or helping deliver furniture, you are helping families in your community have a comfortable place to call home.

Greater Cleveland Food Bank – The Greater Cleveland Food Bank’s mission is to ensure that everyone in the Cleveland community has the nutritious food they need to thrive every day. Volunteer roles include collecting, sorting, and repacking donated food or supporting administrative functions and special projects.

Western Wildlife Corridor – This organization provides a unique volunteer opportunity if you live in the Cincinnati area. You can get outside to learn about the important role we all play in the conservation and stewardship of the Ohio River Valley. Get your hands dirty by volunteering with habitat restoration, trail building and maintenance, and more.

Toledo Humane Society – Are you or a family member an animal lover? There’s no better place to volunteer in the Toledo area than at the Toledo Humane Society. Volunteers support all areas of the organization, from dog walking and kitten cuddling to office assistance, pet fostering, working in the retail shop, and more.

YWCA Dayton – The YWCA of Dayton is committed to eliminating racism and empowering women in the local area. If these are issues you’re particularly passionate about, there are plenty of daily, weekly, and monthly volunteer opportunities at the YWCA. Roles can include helping with childcare support, serving in domestic violence shelters, and more.

Before You Bet would love to see how Ohioans are giving back to their communities from April 17th through April 23rd during National Volunteer Week! Snap a photo of you volunteering and tag @BeforeYouBet on Instagram and @BeforeYouBetOH on Twitter and Facebook!
