Apps to Help Keep Gambling Responsible This Responsible Gaming Education Month

Published: September 12, 2022

September is Responsible Gaming Education Month, which has been set aside by the American Gaming Association to promote responsible gaming. With that goal in mind, the month also serves as a reminder to explore the world of responsible gambling apps. Sports betting apps and online casinos have ushered in a world where making a bet is as easy as pressing a button on your phone. But the ability to gamble easily and quickly can lead to developing a problem with gambling. That’s where apps designed to help keep gambling responsible can be useful.

Responsible gambling apps and in-app responsible gambling features are rapidly growing in popularity. The betting platform DraftKings, which already offers responsible gambling features in its own app, recently announced a collaboration with the responsible gambling app BetBlocker to raise awareness of BetBlocker’s self-exclusion features, according to iGamingBusiness. And several more apps, such as Gambless and Gamble Responsibly America, have also created designated apps.

With the American Gaming Association announcing that Q2 2022 was the industry’s most profitable quarter yet and Ohio set to begin legal sports betting on Jan. 1, 2023, there might be new gamblers and bettors who will be looking for ways to help set their limits and stick to them. Responsible gambling apps can help with that.

Responsible gambling apps can help set let limits like:

  • A limit on the amount of money you can lose
  • A limit on the amount of money you can bet
  • A limit on how much money you put into a betting account
  • A cap on how long you can play in a session or day
  • Self-exclusion features to keep you from gambling at all
  • Reminding you to take a break

Most responsible gambling apps let users stay anonymous and set their own limits, though each has their own guidelines. Some let users schedule certain days of the week or times of day as “no gambling” time. Others have parental control functionality that prevents children from accessing gambling websites and apps. And some even offer access to therapeutic resources and self-assessment quizzes.

Apps are a new and evolving part of the responsible gambling landscape. But they are just one valuable part of the responsible gambling toolkit. Before You Bet (BeforeYouBet.org) can help with additional resources, including a two-minute  quiz to gauge your risk for problems with gambling.
