New Sports Betting PSA Video and Toolkit Encourages Ohioans to “Pause Before You Play”
Published: November 7, 2022
After the universal start date for sports betting on Jan. 1, 2023, many different forms of sports betting will be legal in Ohio. These bets can be placed using licensed online sports books from a computer or phone, or in person at brick-and-mortar locations. Some types of bets can also be placed on digital terminals in bars that already hold a liquor license and sell lottery tickets.
Much like the convenience and popularity of online and mobile entertainment, sports betting will be similarly accessible at the click of a few buttons. And once online sports betting becomes legalized, people will be able to place a bet on nearly every aspect of sporting events in real time, shortening the time it takes to place bets and know the outcome.
Which is why Before You Bet is encouraging Ohioans to “Pause Before You Play” in a new PSA video, resources, and educational materials completely free for everyone to access.
With access increasing, it is believed that more people will try betting for the first time, and the number of people who struggle with problems with gambling will likely increase. There are a few common signs to look for that could indicate a potential problem with gambling. These signs include:
- Betting more often or with more money
- Betting more to make up for previous betting losses
- Withdrawing from relationships with family and friends
- Hiding betting behavior from loved ones
- Borrowing money with no explanation
Whether you participate in sports betting or fantasy sports it’s important to remember to Pause Before You Play. For more resources and information on sports betting and how to engage responsibly visit PauseBeforeYouPlay.org.
