In just a few days, the New Year will be upon us, which is an excellent time to commit to making a resolution to promote responsible gambling. With the start of legal sports betting in Ohio on January 1st, the need to promote responsible gambling has never been greater, and this guide will help you or your community organization do that most effectively in partnership with Before You Bet. Try these four tips to have a successful 2023.
Stay Connected
The responsible gambling landscape is always changing, and one of the best ways to make sure your responsible gambling message reaches the biggest audience is to keep track of the latest developments in the field. The monthly problem gambling newsletter from Before You Bet is a great place to start with the latest news, developments, and resources relevant to problem gambling prevention professionals in Ohio. Educate Yourself & Others
One of the easiest ways to promote responsible gambling is to reach out to your own community network, and the resources on BeforeYouBet.org are here to help you do it. The Before You Bet site includes numerous educational resources on the dangers of problem gambling, including informative statistics on the Tips and Education page and free, easy-to-access problem gambling resources on the Get Help page. And if you or someone you know is trying to gauge whether you are at risk for problem gambling, the Before You Bet quiz is also an excellent resource. While it is not a replacement for an evaluation by a medical profession, the quiz can be a useful tool for community partners and gamblers alike.
Spread the Word in Your Community
Before You Bet has assembled a wide range of toolkits to help community organizations of all kinds provide responsible gambling messages to the people they serve easily and conveniently. The toolkits contain pre-made social media posts, posters, handouts, and other types of digital assets that you can download immediately and can be customized to include your organization’s logo and phone number. With toolkits aimed at youth, seniors, Spanish speakers, African Americans, college students, veterans, and more, there will be a toolkit available for you and your community organization, regardless of who you serve.
Focus on Sports Betting
Legal sports betting is set to kick off in Ohio at the stroke of midnight on January 1, 2023. Responsible gambling experts are concerned as sports betting will greatly expand with legalization, and it has been the most prevalent form of gambling in Ohio for some time now. With more people being exposed to gambling through sports betting, there is an urgent need to promote responsible gambling and information about problem gambling resources. That’s why Before You Bet recently launched the Pause Before You Play campaign, which urges sports bettors and all Ohioans to slow down before placing a bet to set limits, recognize the risks, and know when to stop. The campaign includes a community toolkit with informational fliers, pre-made social media posts, and a video PSA, all of which community partners are encouraged to share in 2023.
