Gambling is an Ineffective Way to Relieve Stress. Try These Tips Instead.

Published: April 17, 2023
One common myth about gambling is that it provides an easy way to unwind and relieve stress. But even though responsible gambling can be a way to spend free time, the random nature of gambling makes it an ineffective way to unwind and can actually increase stress.
Instead, as National Stress Awareness Month is observed, take this opportunity to learn more about ways you can reduce your stress without gambling. Stress can be caused by many different things, from work to school to family life to gambling, and finding ways to lower stress without gambling can help you or someone you know.
Try these tips to lower your stress levels:
- Unplug and Head Outside: Ohio has many wonderful state and local parks that are nearby and free. By putting your phone away and taking the time to enjoy nature for just 15 minutes a day, you can help lower your stress levels. Even walking your dog or sitting on your porch can make a difference. And if you want to venture farther out, a full list of Ohio parks is available at ohiostateparks.gov.
- Reduce Your Caffeine: Many people love sipping a cup of coffee in the morning or drinking a pop with their meals. But drinking too much caffeine can disrupt your sleep schedule and leave you feeling jittery and overwhelmed when a stressful event occurs. By reducing your caffeine intake, you will sleep better and respond to stressful situations with a calmer state of mind.
- Make A Sleep Schedule: When you’re an adult, setting a bedtime for yourself can feel unnecessary. But our bodies and brains need sleep and making sure you get enough of it helps you feel better when you’re under stress. Set a schedule that’s consistent and allows you to get seven to eight hours of sleep; it’s also helpful to turn off any screens before bed.
- Find Small Ways to Exercise and Eat Healthy: It’s the same advice we hear all the time. But that’s because exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet helps boost both your mental and physical health, which can lead to resiliency when life gets stressful. Even small improvements, like taking a daily walk, will relieve stress and help you feel better.
