Looking for a Graduation Gift? Try These Thoughtful Ideas Instead of Lottery Tickets

Published: April 28, 2025
Graduation is a major milestone, marking the start of exciting new possibilities. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for your grad, think twice before giving gambling-related gifts — studies show even seemingly “harmless” gifts like lottery tickets can increase a youth’s risk of developing a gambling disorder later in life.
That’s because a young person’s prefrontal cortex, which manages decision-making and impulse control, isn’t fully developed yet, making it hard for them to weigh the risks. An estimated two to seven percent of youth and 10 percent of college-aged young adults develop a gambling disorder, compared to about one percent of adults.
But it’s not just obvious gifts like lottery tickets that put youth at risk. Video game gift cards can give youth an opportunity to try gambling-like experiences, such as video game loot boxes — increasing their risk at a time when many college-age kids are living on their own for the first time. In a U.K. survey, 20 percent of adults who bet reported that loot boxes were their first introduction to gambling and that the game rewards made them want to try other forms of gambling.

Instead, consider these meaningful gifts to keep graduation season, birthdays, and holidays fun and harm-free:
- A favorite book: Choose a favorite book or one that helped you navigate change — and make it extra special by adding a meaningful note.
- Outdoor gear: Gifts like hiking boots, athletic wear, or a durable backpack encourage youth to get outside, helping them stay grounded as they start a new chapter.
- Art supplies: Like hiking, creativity can help take their mind off daily stress. It can be anything, from a unique journal to painting supplies.
- A college prep kit: Include dorm essentials like a small tableware set and laundry detergent to help them feel prepared.
- A home coffee or tea kit: Does your grad enjoy coffee or tea? Help them create their own brewing station with gear like an electric kettle, tea infuser, or coffee pour over vessel to make their mornings special.
- School supplies: Your grad may be focused on enjoying summer right now, but if they’re going to college, they’ll be grateful you helped them start the semester organized.
A thoughtful gift is just one way to support your grad. It’s also important to talk to them about the risks of gambling. At Change the Game Ohio, you’ll find resources to help you learn more about youth gambling and a discussion guide to help parents start the conversation.
