Sports Betting is Growing. So is the Need for Responsible Play.

Published: May 19, 2025

Sports betting in Ohio continues to increase in size, with almost 16 percent more money bet on sporting events in 2024 than 2023, the first-year betting was legal in the state. In total, Ohioans bet almost $8.9 billion on sports last year, reflecting a new reality: Sports betting has rapidly become the most popular kind of gambling in our state.

The growth in sports betting has also shined a light on responsible play from all sectors of the state and beyond. A new coalition of fantasy sports operators has started a program to self-exclude themselves from all daily fantasy platforms. Additionally, DraftKings has recently announced renewed funding for state affiliates of the National Council on Problem Gambling, as well as a national responsible gambling advertising campaign.

Considering these recent developments, it’s important to remember the steps that people who gamble can take to keep their play responsible.

  • Set Limits: Set limits on the amount of money you are willing to spend on betting, as well as the time you plan to spend placing and tracking bets. By setting limits and keeping yourself accountable to them, you can make sure you are approaching your betting appropriately.
  • Recognize the Risks: All bets come with risk. Betting is a game of chance, not skill, even if you may have some expertise in the sport you’re betting on. Make sure you recognize these risks and only bet what you’re willing to lose.
  • Know When to Stop: Sometimes you just need to walk away. Knowing what to do when that moment comes is crucial for keeping your play responsible.
