Stage I: Gambling, Problem Gambling, and Ohio’s Service System

Schedule: This virtual training will run on Wednesday, July 24th – Friday, July 26th. Each day, the session will run from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM EST with a 1-hour break from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM. Each day will consist of 4 hours of content totaling 12 hours.
Course description: Stage I is the first part of a three-part education series. This training provides education that will increase participants’ knowledge and understanding of the current climate of gambling and gambling expansion, problem gambling risks and warning signs, at-risk populations and co-morbidities of problem gambling with substance abuse and mental illness.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will understand problem gambling definitions and current statistics
  • Participants will recognize current trends and dates specific to Ohio’s gambling and gaming landscape
  • Participants will learn the risks and warning signs of problematic gambling
  • Participants will understand co-morbidities of gambling addiction, substance abuse, and mental illness
  • Participants will become familiar with screening tools to identify gambling addiction
  • Participants will become familiar with other support services and available resources

Continuing Education:
12.0 CEUs are available for this training which can be used toward obtaining the GAMB Endorsement through the Ohio Chemical Dependency Board or towards becoming a counselor qualified to treat gambling disorder through the Ohio Social Worker, Counselor, and Marriage & Family Therapist Board.

Claire is the Workforce Development Manager for PGNO. She has over 15 years of experience working in the prevention field in varying capacities and is an Ohio Certified Prevention Consulsant. She has a passion for educating others on issues that can greatly impact their lives including drug, alcohol, and gambling prevention, coping with emotions in a positive way, and empowering young people in leadership roles. In her current role, Claire provides gambling funds guidance and support for Boards and Providers, manages the Stages Training Series, as well as coordinates the Ohio Problem Gambling Conference.

Jesse is PGNO’s OGTN Manager. Jesse has worked in the treatment services field for 10 years primarily working with clients living with substance use disorders. He has both direct service and administrative experience in this field. Starting in 2020, he started trainings to build competency to assist clients living with gambling disorders, and this has become his primary professional interest. As the OGTN Manager, Jesse heads efforts to connect clients to telehealth services for assistance in treating gambling disorders while also facilitating occasional trainings.
