Simple ways to improve your finances this fall

Published: August 31, 2020

Each new season brings with it an opportunity to reflect and set new goals to improve your health and wellness, including your financial well-being. Here are several ways you can give your finances a boost this fall.

Review what you spend and save

Assess your monthly spending to see if or where you can trim costs. Paying for entertainment subscription services or memberships you’re not using regularly? Consider keeping your favorites and cutting the rest. If you’re interested in living more frugally or building up an emergency savings fund, establishing a trackable, editable monthly budget can help you achieve your goals. There are a variety of budgeting tools that can simplify the process and help you save.

Clean out your closets and cupboards

There’s a chance you have some things—like clothing or appliances—you don’t use very often. If items are in good condition, you may be able to sell them online or through resale stores. You could also donate them to charity, which may be tax deductible. This is an opportunity to make money, free up space in your home, and refocus on the things that really matter to you.

Prep your home for cold weather

From changing furnace filters to checking for and sealing air leaks, a little home upkeep at the start of fall can help you reduce energy costs during the colder months and increase your comfort. Plus, routine maintenance can prevent bigger issues that may be costly to repair.

Plan ahead for holiday spending
The holidays will be here before you know it. Now’s the time to start saving for all of the added costs associated with the holidays, from gifts to travel. Giving of your time or talents can often be more meaningful, in addition to being more affordable. Consider making homemade baked goods, offering to babysit, or teaching someone a skill you have.
