NPC Launches “Operation Responsible Gambling” For Military

The National Council on Problem Gambling has recently launched a new online prevention tool designed to promote responsible gambling for current members of the military and veterans.
Operation Responsible Gambling is a first-of-its-kind online resource specifically tailored for service members. This is needed both across the country and in Ohio, as 1 out of 10 veterans in the state struggle with a problem with gambling.
Playing card games or buying scratch-off tickets are a popular way for those in the military to pass their time, and some international military bases even have slot machines. These activities have the potential to develop into a problem with gambling.
Even after returning home, problem gambling among veterans often coincides with other factors. For veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, 60% struggle with a problem with gambling. Depression among veterans who have a problem with gambling is as high as 76%.
Knowing its prevalence in the military and veteran community, it is important to have helpful resources available for those who may be struggling with a problem with gambling. Operation Responsible Gambling provides that through testimonial videos, self-assessment tools, FAQs, and more to help military members avoid developing a potential problem with gambling.
There’s also a specific section of the Operation Responsible Gambling website dedicated to getting help for military members if they think they might have a problem with gambling. Common signs of someone who might have a problem with gambling include:
- Borrowing money for gambling
- Hiding how much time or money is spent gambling
- Being restless or irritated when not gambling
- Exaggerating wins and minimizing losses
- Hiding bills or unpaid debts
