Before You Bet Launches Veterans Community Toolkit
Published: May 31, 2021
Memorial Day is a time to honor and mourn the brave individuals who have laid down their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. As the country remembers the men and women who paid the ultimate price for freedom, it’s essential to reflect on the challenges veterans face every day, one of which can include a problem with gambling.
Veterans face stressors both in the military and after returning home. One out of ten Ohio veterans struggle with a problem with gambling. Playing card games is a popular way for those in the military to pass the time, and some military bases have slot machines. These everyday pastimes can potentially develop into a problem with gambling.
There are many resources available on Before You Bet’s website for veterans who think they might be struggling with a problem with gambling. This includes a 2-minute problem gambling quiz, a full list of the signs and risks of problem gambling, and educational resources.
There are also ways you can seek treatment if you or a loved one might need it. Please visit BeforeYouBet.org/get-help/ to find free treatment services near you. You can also access the free, confidential helpline 24/7 at 1-800-589-9966 or text 4HOPE to 741741.
Before You Bet hopes this toolkit gives local prevention specialists helpful resources in addressing this community and also reminds veterans that they’re not alone.
